The GEMS Search and Rescue tracking system
SARTRAK, driven by the GEMS 3D Coastal Ocean Model (GCOM3D),
has now gone into operation at the Australian Maritime Safety
Authority in Canberra. The system combines hydrodynamic
modelling and object tracking algorithms, with real-time
numerical weather prediction from Bureau of Meteorology forecast
models, and oceanographic data sensing (CSIRO) to produce
state-of-the-art probabilistic search areas based on
environmental data error analyses. AMSA reports that the
performance of the system is meeting its high expectations and
that GCOM3D and SARTRAK have provided a significant
improvement in the information available for determining search
areas.
